The Queen, the populists and the others New Dutch politics explained to foreigners

Buitenlanders kijken met verbazing naar de klimaatverandering in Nederland. Nederlanders zelf ook. Niet lang geleden leek hun land een multicultureel paradijs. Maar in een mum van tijd hebben de populisten de politieke agenda bepaald. Geert Wilders geeft nu zelfs steun aan een minderheidskabinet, dit tot verdriet van de oude politieke elite. Tegen deze achtergrond geeft dit boekje uitleg over de het reilen en zeilen van het Nederlandse staatsbestel, in het bijzonder rond de kabinetsformatie. Hoe democratisch is dat eigenlijk? Hoe is het mogelijk dat de koningin daarin zo’n grote rol speelt? Kunnen we hier spreken van een democratisch gat?

Outsiders look with surprise to the climate change in the Netherlands. As well as the Dutch themselves. They loved to see their country as a multi-cultural paradise. But today populists are dominating politics and media. Much to the chagrin of the old political elite, including the progressive Head of State, Queen Beatrix. Geert Wilders now even backs a new minority government. In view of all this, this booklet aims at explaining the Dutch governmental system, especially during the formation of a new government. How democratic is this process? How to explain the important role of the Queen within these political structures? Do we stare here in a democratic gap?
